Confused about charging your Tesla? How do I charge my Tesla in Australia?

Confused about charging your Tesla? How do I charge my Tesla in Australia?

Are you confused about how to charge your Tesla? What do you need to charge your Tesla at home or on the road?

This guide is catered mainly for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y owners.

It's best viewed on your phone and there is an option to download and save to your home screen as an app for quick reference by clicking here.

Some things to note before you make any decisions on your home charging:

  • The average vehicle is parked 23hrs/day
  • The average Aussie drives 36km/day
  • Your iPhone/Android can take 2.5hrs to charge from 0% to 100% and like you phone, most Tesla's are charged overnight
  • There are multiple options for charging outside of home which will only increase as the prevalence of EV continues in Australia
  • The cost of a charger installation can vary a lot depending on your property
    • cable needed from your switchboard to your garage
    • single phase or three phase
    • single storey/double storey etc

I have tried to keep this guide simple as there are a lot of in-depth resources online which go through the science and history of all the different type of chargers of which some are not applicable to Model 3 and Model Y.

I have also provided a link to Solar Quote's EV Charger comparison which runs through all the current home chargers and their differences. Click here to view their comparison and spreadsheet.

As I'm not an electrician, please speak to your electrician before doing any work and check if your state has different regulations.
