Before Arriving

When you receive your brand new Tesla you would no doubt be excited. Upon delivery, it may be worthwhile to have a list together to inspect your new Tesla. Some important things to get ready before going down to pickup your car:

  • Ensure you have insurance on your Tesla before arriving. Compare different insurers as your current insurer may not be the best for a Tesla in Australia
  • Bring your driver's license and ensure you have proof of payment and the necessary information and documents if trading in your car
  • Have the Tesla app downloaded and installed on your phone
  • If trading in and you're keeping your original car plates, find out the respective process for the state you are in
  • Trade In vehicle: ensure service log book is in the car, spare keys, current registration papers and remove all personal belongings from glovebox, boot, etc. You can also request to have your insurance cancelled effective the next day after pickup so you don't forget
  • If you have toll roads in your state, request for new toll tags. You may need to get a new eTag with a windscreen mount from your relevant transport authority/toll provider. Tesla recommends putting this on the passenger side next to the rear view mirror. If you know the car registration, you can update this with the relevant provider.
  • If you are getting a wrap, ceramic coating or PPF, ensure you have an appointment booked close to pickup date
  • Bring a cigarette lighter USB adapter as well as a USB-C and USB-A Cable to pickup

Exterior

  • Make sure your order matches the car you are being delivered including options selected such as paint colour, wheels, interior colour and software upgrades (if any)
  • Paint is even with no scratches, swirls or dents
  • Panels have no uneven or huge gaps (>4mm) between doors/boot/frunk and lights
  • Check to see under the car is free from scratches and dents
  • All 4 rims/wheels are scratch and dent free
  • Check no distortion, chips or cracks on all glass including windscreen, side mirrors, windows and glass on the roof
  • Check all exterior light housing for condensation and cracks
  • Open and close all doors and check windows close tight when doors are closed
  • Test boot/trunk (test powered tailgate), frunk and charge port to make sure they open and close properly including the weather sealing for each one (check tow hook is also in the frunk)
  • Open and close all windows to make sure they are smooth and that they don't rub or make any sounds
  • Inspect the camera modules visually for damage
  • Check wipers are working
  • Check weatherproofing on the doors, frunk and the trunk

After pickup

When you have the car at home:

  • If you traded in your old car, now would be a good time to cancel your insurance on your previous vehicle if you haven't done so already
  • If you weren't able to update your toll eTag details before you got your Tesla, you should have all the details required now to do this
  • You can test out your UMC cable on a normal power point even if you have a wall charger installed to ensure it works if you are ever need to charge away from home
  • You can install your aftermarket accessories such as floor mats and screen protectors

It would be advisable to go through the screen and familiarise yourself with the menus. This is also where you can setup the car:

  • Setup individual driver profiles for steering sensitivity, mirrors, autopilot, etc
  • Setup a guest profile so your settings aren't changed if you intend to have people drive your car
  • Setup mobile key for each driver
  • Setup Pin to Drive if you want an extra layer of security
  • Setup WiFi at home so that your Tesla can update overnight
  • Check tyre pressures are correct and fix if needed
  • Setup sentry mode and dash cam
  • Setup streaming services such as Spotify, Netflix etc
  • Drag and rearrange the apps on the dock to your liking and ensure you familiarise where all the icons and shortcuts are
  • Setup charge scheduling based on your electricity plan and your daily habits (change your home electrical plan if your provider has an EV plan. Some require proof of ownership of an EV)

On your Phone:

  • Download Plugshare or A Better Route Planner to find and get updates on chargers
  • Download apps and register with Chargefox/Smartcharge/Chargepoint/Nextcharge so you can charge at multiple 3rd party chargers all around Australia

Once you're ready, make sure you drive and enjoy your new Tesla around so you can calibrate the car for Autopilot. Sign up for Enhanced Autopilot or FSD if applicable!

Fantastic list. Most people would just glance and sign the paperwork. Thanks for taking the time to compile this hand check list. DK
